Dave Murray in Democrat bid for at-large city seat

Dave Murray is a candidate for City Council at-large on the Democrat ticket in the May 5 city primary election.

Murray, 66, and his wife, Sue, are 37-year residents of Greencastle and reside at 514 E. Seminary St.

Murray's first civic engagement was with United Way, at one point serving as the chairman of the Admissions and Allocations Committee that recommended to the board the best uses of the public's donations.

Murray was then asked to co-chair, ironically with an IBM staff member, the Business Development Committee as part of Greencastle's strategic planning board at the time, Greencastle 2001. That led to Murray's appointment as the first president of the board of the Greencastle/Putnam Development Center.

Six weeks later, IBM announced it was leaving town.

"Every weekday for two and a half months a group of about 15 of us met at a local bank," Murray said. "In 72 days we had our first new business.

"You could feel Greencastle's momentum at the time," he added, "just like you can once again today."

Murray became a member of Greencastle's Citizens Advisory Commission for Industrial Development (CACFID), to this day one of only two CACFID's in the state. He stepped down from CACFID when his wife was elected mayor.

Asked why he wants to serve on the City Council, Murray said, "Sue and her team have accomplished so much in the last eight years. The momentum is back in Greencastle, and I would like to do my part in keeping that momentum going. A Council seat seemed like the best way for me to do my part."

Murray is president of his family's business, the National Center for College Costs. At the request of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the Center has built the most comprehensive college selection, admission and financial aid website in the country which can be found at www.indianacollegecosts.org.
