MONTEZUMA -- The South Putnam baseball team continues to gather confidence as the consecutive win total increases. The Eagles have won three consecutive games the latest coming courtesy of Riverton Parke Thursday. South Putnam won the game 8-1.

The inning pitcher was Brandon Gierke who pitched all seven innings and recorded nine strikeouts with no earned runs.

"We are playing our best baseball of the year," Eagle coach Zach Love said. "Tonight, we did so many of the little things really well. We made a number of plays defensively to help out our pitcher. We moved guys over and ran the bases extremely well. We're continuing to hit the ball on a more consistent basis as a team."

Those big defensive plays give the South Putnam big hitters more opportunities at the plate and Thursday the Eagles took advantage.

Gierke had a complete day, smacking a home run over center field to score two runs.

Jake Carmichael and Jacob Schroer added two hits apiece to contribute to the cause.

Braxston Lucas had a two-run single to the right centerfield gap and Daniel Grundlock scored 2 runs and added an RBI.

"I'm really proud of my seniors Zane Crosby, Aaron Cole, Tyler Vandermark, Braxston Lucas, Jake Carmichael, and Jacob Schroer," Love said. "Our season got off to a difficult start, but they continued to work hard and try to get the most out of themselves and their teammates."

South Putnam has a weekend break before Monday when they are back in action against Tri West.
