ROACHDALE--The North Putnam Cougars softball team had a 1-0 lead on the Cascade Cadets Tuesday until the fifth inning when the Cadets managed to take the lead before the inning was tied at its ending.

North Putnam hosted the game Tuesday night after getting a win the night before over the Cadets at Cascade. "Tuesday" night after losing the early lead they gave up three runs in the seventh inning to lose, 5-3.

"We left some people still stranded on base," Cougar coach Benny Ault said. "That's still a problem. We split with Cascade. I was hoping we would get that win tonight. They're playing hard. That's all I ask for."

Alisha Burch came up to the plate in the fifth inning for the Cadets, down one, and had two base runners on with two outs. Burch hit a double that drove in both runners to give her team the lead. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the inning because of a Lauren Johnston single and score.

In the seventh inning the Cougars had to play defense after stranding two runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth.

Defensively, the Cougars had been really good all night long not giving up a single error, but to start the seventh inning they put the lead batter on because of an infield error and after an sacrifice play made by the Cadets, Burch reached on another error committed by North Putnam.

With first and third bases occupied the Cadets only had one out. Sophomore Alexis Gross was due up at bat and with one swing she hit an inside-the park-home run that gave her team the final lead, 5-2 and the victory.

"In the-field home run," Ault said. "Two outfielders fell and we told them just before not to let anything behind them. It went behind them and that's just an adjustment we have to make."

North Putnam had gained the lead early in the game in the second inning after freshman Chloe LaPierre walked and came around to score.

Senior Sabrina Surber pitched for the Cougars and had seven strikeouts. She was also 3-for-4 batting with a double.

"If we're hitting the ball hard and not hitting pop flies but line drives and they're (Cascade) just catching them that's just part of the game," Ault said.
