Section of South Indiana to be made two-way street
Reversing a trend that has seen a number of local streets become one-way over the years, Greencastle city officials are in the process of making one short section of South Indiana Street a two-way road.
Currently the section of South Indiana that runs between Hanna and Olive streets on the city's southwest side is one-way southbound as it goes between DePauw University's Peeler Art Center on the west and the parking lot of the Julian Math and Science Center on the east. Indiana is presently one-way southbound from Hanna all the way south to Berry Street.
Ordinance 2015-2, introduced before the Greencastle City Council Tuesday night, would make the Hanna-to-Olive section of South Indiana two-way, allowing persons using the Lilly Center, Peeler and the Science Center and their adjacent parking areas easier access in and out.
Currently much of the traffic, especially those unfamiliar with the DPU campus, needlessly goes south all the way to Berry Street before going east or west or drives all the way around the Lilly Center to gain access to through streets.
Making the change simpler is that no homes or businesses exist along the section of South Indiana being converted to two-way. Also, it was noted, there is no on-street parking allowed in that area, which should make for plenty of space for two-way traffic.
The amended ordinance, which will revise the one-way south designation for South Indiana as being between Olive and Berry streets, passed unanimously Tuesday night on its first of two public readings after a motion by Council President Adam Cohen.
City Council members Mark Hammer, Jinsie Bingham, Tyler Wade and Phyllis Rokicki added assenting votes.
Second reading and adoption of Ordinance 2015-2 is expected to be considered at the City Council's next regular session, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9 at City Hall.
