Eagles, Tiger Cubs claim titles as county runners advance in 13 events

TERRE HAUTE -- Putnam County Schools made a strong showing Tuesday night at the Terre Haute North Girls' Track Sectional, claiming the first three spots behind the large Terre Haute Schools.

Behind Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South, Greencastle was third with 66 points, South Putnam fourth with 54 and North Putnam fifth with 39.5. Cloverdale finished ninth with 21 points.

Athletes from all four Putnam County schools will advance to the Bloomington North Regional on Tuesday, May 26.

The Eagles and Tiger Cubs each claimed two individual crowns on the night.

For South Putnam, Madie Egold won the 3,200 with a time of 12:13.43 and Arial Higgins claimed the 300 hurdles in 49.72 seconds.

The Tiger Cubs had championships from Katerina King, who ran the 100 in 12.85 seconds and Mia Stevens, with a shot put of 33 feet, 2.5 inches.

Corrie Romer will join fellow sprinter King at regional after finishing second in the 200 with a time of 28.22. High jumper Allison White also advanced with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.

The Tiger Cubs also claimed third in a pair of relays, with the 4X100 team of Bailey Lausee, Romer, Sarah Miller and King running a 52.99 and the 4X400 team of King, White, Brittany Welker and Romer finishing in 4:27.22.

Egold and Higgins each added a top-three finish to their championships. Egold advanced with third place in the 1,600 in a time of 5:39.43, while Higgins was second in the 100 hurdles in 16.55.

The Eagles are also sending a relay on to Bloomington, as Egold, Maddie McHugh, Michaela Scales and Jessica Jones placed third in 10:29.08.

For North Putnam Adria Millican is the lone survivor, having placed third with a shot put of 32 feet, 5 inches.

Despite their ninth-place finish, the Clovers still managed to claim a pair of regional spots. Laura Worthington was second in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, 9.5 inches. Samantha Atwood claimed third in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet.
