BLOOMINGTON -- Paced by a couple of runners narrowly missing the state finals, the Putnam County girls' track season ended likely Tuesday evening at the Bloomington North Regional.

With the top three competitors advancing in each event, South Putnam senior Ariel Higgins and Greencastle junior Kat King came tantalizingly close to qualifying for the IHSAA State Finals, each finishing fourth in an event.

Higgins' lost a heartbreaker in the 300 hurdles to Abby Denham of White River Valley, finishing in 47.15 seconds, just a one-hundredth of a second closer than Denham.

While not quite as close in terms of time, King also came so close, finishing fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.06, just missing out on a return trip to the state finals after qualifying as a sophomore.

As a team, South Putnam finished in 20th place with nine points, followed by Greencastle, which was tied for 21st with seven.

With two points, Cloverdale tied for 28th. North Putnam failed to record a point.

Higgins led the charge for the Eagles, adding a sixth-place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.88.

Also running in a pair of individual events for South Putnam was Madie Egold, who came home 11th in the 1,600 (5:55.25) and 14th in the 3,200 (13:11.95).

The Eagles' 4X800 relay of Egold, Maddie McHugh, Michaela Scales and Jessica Jones finished eighth in a time of 10:43.63.

A pair of relays were in action for the Lady Tiger Cubs, with the 4X100 team of Bailey Lausee, Corrie Romer, Sarah Miller and King finishing seventh with a time of 52.36.

The 4X400 team of Allison White, Brittany Welker, King and Romer was 11th with a time of 4:26.06.
