Firefighters quickly knocked down a fire at this Jackson Township home overnight Saturday, limiting most of the damage to the basement.

NEW MAYSVILLE -- A quick response by local firefighters minimized the damage at a house fire in southern Jackson Township late Saturday night.

Roachdale Fire Chief Mike Poole was out investigating a lightning strike to a tree when the call came in around 11:40 p.m. of a basement fire at 6243 E. CR 800 North.

"We got lucky on that one. I was only about three miles away," Poole said.

Poole got to the scene quickly, finding a fire that was largely contained to the basement.

Firefighters from Roachdale, Floyd Township, Bainbridge and Danville all responded and had the fire put out before 12:30 a.m.

"We got a quick knockdown on it," Poole said.

That quick action kept the damage to the basement, but for one hole in the couple's bedroom. There was additional water and smoke damage to the home.

Investigation revealed that another lightning strike was to blame, having entered the house through a water pipe.

Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately 2-1/2 hours.
