CLOVERDALE -- On Friday, May 29 at approximately 9 p.m., Indiana State Police troopers and Cloverdale police officers responded to the Cloverdale Marathon Truck Stop for a report of an injured man.

Upon arrival, officers located 32-year-old David Heidrick of Spencer bleeding profusely from a head wound. Heidrick was transported to Putnam County Hospital and later airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition.

Officers began interviewing apparent participants and witnesses to the suspected crime and were able to develop probable cause that Heidrick and a male were involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot of the Cloverdale Super 8 motel prior to the 911 call of the injured Heidrick.

The male suspect was allegedly accompanied by the mother of Heidrick's four-year-old daughter, as well as the young daughter. After the altercation, Heidrick was able to drive to the Cloverdale Marathon Truck Stop for help.

The male and female suspects fled the area, but shortly after the incident, the female, Jessica Burns, 27, of Gosport, returned to the motel and was confronted by police. She was somewhat evasive and allegedly gave false statements about the incident.

Further investigation over both Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, led officers to the male suspect, David Joines, 37, of Indianapolis. He was arrested late Sunday afternoon after speaking with officers and booked on a felony charge of battery resulting in bodily injury. He was incarcerated in the Putnam County Jail.

Burns was booked into Putnam County Jail on a charge of assisting a criminal.

Heidrick was released from the hospital today. After the altercation, the four-year-old was remanded to the custody of other family members.

The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
