County Jail

Several people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 12:35 a.m. Saturday, Lawrence Alan Newlin, 54, Roachdale, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated.

* At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Edmond Gregory Goddard, 55, Cloverdale, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated.

* At 10:50 a.m. Monday, Kyle Todd Hyten, 25, Greencastle, was booked in for theft.

City Police

Three recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officials.

* At 10:16 a.m. Friday, Samantha Jo Mitchell, 30, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Jeff Modlin on a Putnam County warrant for failure to appear in court on an original charge of theft.

Arrested at a North College Avenue residence, Mitchell was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

* At 11:41 p.m. Friday, Robert Sims, 26, Fillmore, was arrested on a Clay County warrant relative to the original charge of theft.

Arrested at a Greenwood Avenue residence by Sgt. Charles Inman, Sims was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

* At 12:20 a.m. May 29, Charles Spiker, 35, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Matt Huffman following a traffic stop on North Jackson Street.

Charged with possession of marijuana and reckless possession of paraphernalia, Spiker was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

Two recent property-damage accidents were investigated recently by city officers.

* At 8:10 p.m. Sunday, a one-vehicle mishap was reported on County Road 125 South.

Jacob Whitcomb, 22, Roachdale, was eastbound, driving a 1999 Mercury Cougar when one or both of the wheels on the passenger side of the car went off the edge of the roadway, Sgt. Inman reported.

The driver steered left but overcorrected, Inman said, losing control of the car and striking a fence owned by John Martin of Reelsville.

Total damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

* At 11:23 a.m. Friday, a two-vehicle accident occurred at Veterans Memorial Highway and Warren Drive.

Sharon Ernest, 49, Paragon, was eastbound on Veterans Highway, driving a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. As she passed Warren Drive, Ernest noticed a 2005 Chevrolet, driven by Abigail Walker, 17, Greencastle, was inching forward and then pulled out of Warren Drive.

Walker told Capt. Chris Jones her view was obstructed by a vehicle in the turn lane and that when she saw the approaching Camaro, she inadvertently hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

Total damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

Sheriff's Department

* At 11:10 a.m. Friday, Billy W. Starnes, 71, Bainbridge was traveling west on U.S. 36 prior to entering Bainbridge in a 2002 Pontiac Montana.

Starnes advised Deputy James Boller that he "must have fallen asleep" and lost control of his vehicle. He then crossed the east bound lane and traveled into the south bound ditch. He also struck a pole and crashed into a fence.

Damage was estimated between $5,001 and $10,000.

* At 6:02 p.m. Friday, a multiple-vehicle accident was reported at the intersection of U.S. 231 and County Road 350 South involving Rachel A. Hanebutt, 22, Huntingburg in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee and Nehemiah C. Coon, 18, Cloverdale in a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Both drivers advised a third vehicle stopped abruptly in the road way to miss a vehicle in front of the line of cars.

Hanbutt was traveling on U.S. 231 and took evasive measures to miss the vehicle stopped in front of her in the road. Coon was traveling behind Hanebutt when he swerved to miss the collision as well, causing Coon to rear-end Hanebutt.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage, with no injuries reported. Damage estimated between $2,501 and $5,000.

* At 7:24 p.m. on Saturday, Reserve Deputy Rick Lambert was dispatched to the BP station at 1013 N. Main St., Cloverdale, on a report of a damaged vehicle

Demetrice Jefferson of Avon told Lambert that his 2015 Dodge Journey had been struck by another vehicle while parked at the station.

Jefferson said he was inside when a witness to the incident told him the vehicle had been hit by a Penske rental box truck pulling a car trailer.

The Penske truck was drvien by Derick Womble, 47, Hernando, Miss. However, Womble told Lambert he had not hit the Jefferson vehicle, even driving over the curb to avoid contact.

While damage to Jefferson's vehicle was apparent, no sign of contact was found on the Penske truck or trailer.

Jefferson said the original witness had left the scene and did not leave contact information.

The store manager said that surveillance cameras were not pointed in the right direction to be helpful in the matter.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.
