Indiana State Police

A Wednesday morning crash sent a Clay County man to Putnam County Hospital after a fellow driver reportedly disregarded a stopsign at Manhattan on U.S. 40, Indiana State Police at Putnamville reported.

The commander of the Putnamville District, State Police Lt. Dan Jones, came upon a two-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 40 at County Road 445 West (Manhattan Road) just after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2009 Kia SUV, driven by 62-year-old Todd Fisher of Greencastle, was northbound on CR 445 West and reportedly failed to stop for the stopsign at U.S. 40. The Fisher vehicle then struck the side of a 2007 Chrysler Sebring driven by Shawn Hughes, 28, of Brazil.

The Hughes vehicle came to rest inverted, with Hughes being able to exit the vehicle on his own, authorities said.

Fisher complained of pain, but refused treatment at the scene. Putnam County Operation Life paramedics transported Hughes to Putnam County Hospital for treatment of neck and shoulder pain. Seatbelts were in use by Hughes and Fisher.

Fisher was cited for disregarding a stopsign.

Assisting Jones at the scene were Putnam County Sheriff's Department officers and Operation Life paramedics.
