Sheriff's Department

Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a pair of recent property damage accidents.

* At 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Deputy Kyle Gibbons was dispatched to the area of County Road 50 South near County Road 525 East for a single-vehicle accident.

Gibbons found a heavily damaged 2007 Pontiac G6 sitting among a group of trees. The operator had apparently fled the scene.

Markings on the road and in the grass indicate the car had been eastbound on 50 South when it crossed the centerline and onto the north shoulder. The vehicle then crossed back over the road, leaving the south side.

The car then slid through the crass before making rear impact with a power pole. It then continued before coming to rest in the trees.

Gibbons searched the area, unable to locate a driver.

That evening, Gibbons contacted vehicle owner Blake Doolin and his wife Destiny, who said the car had been borrowed by a friend named Terrel Terry, 21, Cloverdale.

Destiny said Terry had called them after the accident, saying the vehicle was not in bad shape and he had left the scene.

Gibbons contacted Terry, who said he had been a driver. He said he was eastbound when he encountered a vehicle in his lane. Terry said he cut the wheel and lost control.

Asked why he left the scene, Terry said, "I panicked. I didn't fully understand what was going on and I took off."

Terry said he may have hit his head and felt a slight dizziness after the accident. He told Gibbons he didn't believe he needed further medical attention.

When asked about the odor of alcohol at the scene of the accident, Terry said he had purchased two cases of beer and a bottle of whiskey. He said he believed the bottles may have broken in the accident.

Terry said afterward he ran and "jumped in ditches" to avoid detection, going toward Fillmore.

He was cited for leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

The vehicle suffered extensive damage and was towed. Damage was listed at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 5:07 a.m. on Thursday, Burton J. Olson, 33, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 125 South in a 2000 Chevrolet Impala when a group of deer ran from the south side of the road.

Burton told Deputy Mike Downing he swerved to avoid the deer but lost control of his vehicle due to the rain-soaked road.

The vehicle left the north side of the road, passing through a shallow ditch and hitting a tree head-on.

Olson declined medical attention.

The vehicle was towed, with damages listed at $2,501-$5,000.
