Fillmore councilmen remain active as retirement approaches

FILLMORE -- Two Fillmore Town Councilmen who are retiring at the end of the year are keeping themselves busy serving the town.

In the absence of fellow Councilman Curt Leonard or any other town official, Alan Jones and Meridith Trusty gave a report on their recent activities at the Thursday, July 2 town council meeting.

Jones reported a number of road patching jobs have been completed, though June rains slowed their progress.

One Fillmore resident expressed her appreciation of the work the men do.

"I know it's made a difference on Old Right-of-Way Road," she said. "It's appreciated."

The men will likely get more cold mix asphalt from the Putnam County Highway Department to finish the summer patching job.

Jones and Trusty have also been trimming trees along Putnam Street, attempting to increase the visibility of signs.

The council also revisited the issue of three unsafe houses that were discussed at a June special session. As a result of the meeting, the Putnam County Health Department has declared three structures unfit for habitation.

However, the next steps in getting anything done about the eyesores is unclear.

"What we're going to do about them, we still don't know," Jones said. "We need money. As far as we're concerned we've taken it about as far as we can go."

Jones also expressed concern about the repainting of the town water tower. Although the body has been repainted white, the crew has stopped work and the cardinal has not been repainted on the structure. Jones said he has told Clerk-Treasurer Paul Alleyn not to pay the claim until the job is finished.
