Luella Esther Matilda "Tillie" Gray, 83, formerly of Greencastle, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, surrounded by her immediate family.

She was born Jan. 17, 1932 in Holland, Ind., to Daniel C. and Lena (Nussmeyer) Schroeder and was raised by her father and stepmother, Ida Sickbert, after her mother's death.

She graduated from Holland High School in 1950.

While working at General Electric she married Harvey Gray of Reelsville. On June 30, they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

Tillie enjoyed camping, hiking and traveling to historic places. During her family's travels she visited 44 of the 48 contiguous United States.

In researching her genealogy, Tillie discovered she was a distant cousin to Neil Armstrong and felt a strong bond with him. While employed at P.R. Mallory's in Greencastle she helped make the capacitor that was used in the Apollo mission for Neil Armstrong's lift-off flight from the moon.

Tillie loved to play the piano and organ until she lost her hearing. She liked to plant flowers, read, do crossword and jigsaw puzzles and write letters to family and friends.

She is survived by her brother, Melvin Schroeder of Holland and sister Mildred Helmerich of Huntingburg; husband Harvey Gray; two daughters, Lee Ann Gray of Cloverdale and Ginger Ward of Valkaria, Fla.; son Michael (Sheila) Gray of Brownsburg; four grandchildren, Joe Siebrase of Zionsville, Nathan Siebrase of Tybee Island, Ga., Mahala Gadley of Cleveland and Eric Ward of Florida; two stepgrandchildren, Suzette Corradi and James Burton; two great-grandchildren, Cole Siebrase and Paige Gadley; three step-great-grandchildren, Aaron Corradi, Morgan Corradi and Christian Burton; one great-great-grandchild, Owen Corradi; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Tillie Gray will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Holland. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.
