Sheriff's Department

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department responded to a pair of recent property-damage accidents.

* At 8:48 a.m. Thursday, a sideswipe accident occurred on U.S. 231 near County Road 1300 South when a Bloomington woman attempted an illegal pass and failed to complete it in time.

William D. O'Neal, 34, Danville, was southbound in a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a trailer. Julia K. Gould, 25, Bloomington, was behind him in a 2010 Honda Civic.

Approaching from the south was Cassandra L. Williams, 30, Quincy.

O'Neal told Capt. Tom Helmer that Gould attempted to pass him in a no-passing zone that was marked with lines and a sign.

At that time, he observed Williams approaching. O'Neal said Gould sideswiped Williams' vehicle.

Williams told police she saw Gould's vehicle approaching in her lane and impact occurred before she could react.

Gould told Helmer she began the pass on a dotted yellow line and did not see Williams' vehicle until it was too late.

Gould was cited for failure to obey signs and markings while operating a motor vehicle.

Williams complained of hand and finger pain but refused medical attention from Operation Life.

Helmer was assisted at the scene by ISP Trooper DuJuan McFadden, Cloverdale Police Officer Luke Brown and the Cloverdale Fire Department.

Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.

*At 12:44 a.m. on Friday, Mariah G. Huge, 17, Quincy, was southbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 1200 South in a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle when she hit a deer.

Deputy Kyle Gibbons reported significant damage to the front end and right side of the car.

Damage was listed at $2,501-$5,000.
