Sheriff's Department

Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies have responded to a number of recent crashes.

* At 2:44 p.m. on Friday, Johnathan P. Britton, 59, Reelsville, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado when his truck left the road on the right side. The vehicle crossed County Road 750 West while off the road, ending up in a wooded area.

Britton told Deputy Adam Hull he just ran off the road and wasn't clear what happened.

Britton had injuries to his right eye and face but was able to get out of the vehicle and walk out of the wooded area with assistance.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 2:05 a.m. on Saturday, Nathaniel L. Corrie, 18, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 42, approaching County Road 1275 South in a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Corrie told Deputy Virgil Lanning the corner came up too fast and he lost control. The car slid off the left side of the road, struck two fences and then two farm implements before coming to rest in a pasture.

The driver admitted he was traveling at an unsafe speed and was cited.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 11:24 a.m. on Saturday, Judy K. Hart, 65, Gosport, was pulling through the drive-up window at the Cloverdale McDonald's in a 2008 Ford F350 when her trailer tires hit the speaker box.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 4:12 p.m. on Saturday, Joseph C. Grove, 27, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer pulling a boat. Timothy M. Florence, 44, Crawfordsville, was following in a 1982 Chevrolet Hi-Cube van pulling a trailer.

The vehicles were approaching Mill Street in Cloverdale, where Patricia A. Stewart, 50, Brazil, was stopped eastbound, waiting to enter traffic.

Florence told Deputy Hull he did not see any brake lights on Grove's vehicle or boat trailer as Grove tried to turn right onto Mill Street. Florence said he could not avoid rear-ending Grove's boat trailer.

Grove's SUV then slid into Stewart's vehicle. Additionally, the boat Grove had in tow slid forward and hit the back of his vehicle.

Stewart said he did not see any turn signals activated on Grove's vehicle.

Grove said he thought all of his lights and signals were in working order.

Damage was listed at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 6:25 p.m. on Saturday, Preston A. Lady, 19, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 725 West preparing to turn left onto County Road 25 South in a 1993 Toyota Camry. Melvin R. Young, 35, Reelsville, was eastbound on 25 South, approaching 725 West in a 1996 Chevrolet truck.

Deputy Mike Downing said it appeared Lady was left of center making the turn, leaving no room for Young's vehicle. Young apparently got as far off the roadway as possible, but could not avoid the collision, hitting Lady's driver's side rear quarter panel with his driver's side front.

Damage was listed at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 7:58 p.m. on Saturday, Deputy Lanning was dispatched to a one-vehicle crash on County Road 900 west near County Road 250 South.

Ignatius J. Wilson, 24, Greencastle, was apparently the driver of a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am but said he had no memory of what happened.

Evidence at the scene indicated that Wilson was southbound on 900 West when the car left the right side of the road, struck a fence and came to rest on its top in a small creek.

Wilson was taken to Putnam County Hospital via ambulance for a neck injury.

Lanning found a flask and an opened bottle of Seagram's gin at the scene. Wilson refused to submit to a portable breath test but tested at .22 percent blood alcohol content on the certified test at the hospital.

Wilson was also cited for expired plates and driving without financial responsibility.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 8:36 p.m. on Sunday, Kathryn Giberson, 56, Cloverdale, was southbound on County Road 400 West in 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Giberson told Deputy Lanning she ran off the road on the right side and overcorrected, losing control. The vehicle slid off the left side and hit a highway sign.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 4:46 a.m. Tuesday, David L. Delp, 61, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 just north of County Road 100 North in a 2000 Chevrolet S10 when he noticed a car approaching from behind.

Shelby M. Dean, 23, Roachdale, was also southbound on U.S. 231 in a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass.
