CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale High School band and color guard hope to cast a spell on Indiana State Fair-goers Saturday.

The students spent Thursday practicing their "Spellbound" routine, with the color guard wearing the witchy attire and band members decked out in uniforms on the football field.

Band Director Bill Cole said the musical arrangement incorporates the "Wizard of Oz," "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Night on Bald Mountain."

The 50 Cloverdale students are expected to perform around 11:30 a.m. Saturday during the Indiana State Fair Band Day. CHS has been performing at the event for several years.

"This is a good opportunity for marching experience during the summer and there are less conflicts during the summer. It also gives students something to do. We have very good student leadership," Cole explained.

Drum majors Anna Cole, Tanner White and Trinity Rairdon have participated in the Indiana State Fair contest for several years and said they have a lot of fun.

"This is a chance to perform in front of a bunch of people that love music as much as we do," Cole, a senior, said.

White, a senior, said the Indiana State Fair gives students an opportunity to show off the skills they have been practicing all summer, starting in May of each year.

Rairdon, a sophomore, said even if Cloverdale does not place as high as it would like among the schools from across the state, they are not disappointed because they were able to have a lot of fun with the routine.

Last year, the CHS band performed an Americana-themed routine, so they are excited to put on a little different show this year, which also includes witch's brooms to the normal rifle and flag routines.

"You get to see the story happen in the routine and how the band breaks the spell," Cole explained about the performance.

Cole added in her time performing with CHS at the Indiana State Fair she has seen the band and color guard blossom in their choreographed presentation. She said this is the best group she has seen.
