Area 30 student count near projection as school year starts

Thursday, August 13, 2015

Area 30 Career Center was within three students of the projected enrollment at the start of the day Tuesday.

Assistant director Chad Nunley informed the board of directors the enrollment was at 346 students, which is just three shy of the projected student numbers for the year. Nunley noted the number of students could increase by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, the board approved the 2015-16 handbooks for certified staff, non-certified staff and students.

Nunley said the only changes in the staff handbooks included dates and the inclusion of the new Eminence superintendent.

The only major change in the student handbook was the removal of the form fitting clothing restriction because the issue arises often and staff have trouble determining what is considered a violation.

Nunley said he met with area assistant principals who said schools are facing the same issues.

The board approved executive director Lora Busch's attendance of the Association of Governmental Risk Pools conference Oct. 4-6 in Chicago.

She explained this conference will provide her with more information about the school's Wabash Valley-West Central Indiana School Insurance Trust.

The board voted to hire Alan Zerkel as a mentor and evaluator for students and staff. Busch said this position would be geared more toward the non-traditional students.

Zerkel's position would be paid from the Carl D. Perkins Fund.
