The Putnam County tennis season got under way Wednesday as Greencastle took on South Putnam at home. The Tiger Cubs earned the victory against South Putnam 4-1 with the No. 2 doubles taking the lone victory for the Eagles.

Senior Zach Rayce and sophomore Hunter Croan were victorious for South Putnam against Jacob Harris and Micah Hammond, winning two sets 6-4.

"I was really happy with No. 2 doubles," Love said. "That's a couple guys that haven't played together. They meshed well tonight and it's definitely something that they can build off of into the rest of this week."

Greencastle juniors Nathan Gobert and Elijah Lewis took a big win in the No. 1 doubles slot 6-0 and 6-1, against seniors Dylan Drawbaugh and Jacob Lorimer.

In the No. 3 singles GHS sophomore Sean Ramey earned the win over freshman Thomas Fanning, taking control in the second game 6-0 after a close 6-4 win in the first.

"It's a nice early win but we have to continue to get better," GHS coach Kevin Rowe said. "South Putnam has a lot of younger guys and some of the teams were face will have more upperclassmen. But each game win or lose is a learning experience. We came away with the win but hopefully we learned something from it."

Greencastle junior Yuji Mozawa took two wins over sophomore Noah Emmerick 6-3, 6-2 and junior Jed Fajt won two competitive matches over senior Josh Stewart each 6-2.

"We all were nervous," Rowe said. "But they snapped out of it. We only have two returning varsity members but a lot of them do have that tennis experience and it was good to see how they were able to turn things around."

Greencastle sophomore Nate Hensley won in the JV No. 1 singles match against freshman Garrett Heavin 6-6 (7-10), 1-1. Love wants his team to remain positive at the onset of the season.

"It's our first match out, and really we have four guys that have played tennis before," Love said. "We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores so I'm just trying to keep them positive. We've got a lot of matches here early. So we can't get too far down we have to bounce back."

Love said it was a pleasure to have watched Josh Stewart as the first four-year tennis player at South Putnam since John Todd Crosby in the 1980s.

"It's really cool that we've had the opportunity to see Josh through," Love said. "He's the first four-year tennis player we've had. We had tennis back in the '70s and this is our fourth year. It's pretty neat that he's the first to make it through."
