Match-up of Meyer brothers highlights football week two

Thursday, August 27, 2015

A fledgling family rivalry in a game between two county schools will be in the spotlight when Putnam County schools take to the gridiron again Friday.

Week two of high school football features Greencastle visiting Cloverdale, as well as North Putnam at home against Southmont, and South Putnam hosting Brown County. All games kick off at 7 p.m.

The match-up of the Tiger Cubs (0-1) and the Clovers (0-1) takes on particular interest because it pits GHS head coach Mike Meyer against his younger brother, Cloverdale head coach Tony Meyer.

The sons of longtime DePauw baseball head coach Ed Meyer, coaching is in the blood for the brothers. Mike returned to the sideline this season for Greencastle, where he accumulated a 19-32 record between 2005 and 2009. Tony made his varsity head coaching debut last week for the Clovers.

Each team is looking for its first win of the young season, following the Tiger Cubs' 28-7 loss to North Putnam and the Clovers' 40-6 loss at South Putnam.

The Clovers look the break a 10-game losing streak overall, as well as a five-game skid against the Tiger Cubs.

The Greencastle-Cloverdale game will be broadcast live on 92.3 WREB.

North Putnam's (1-0) week two game with Southmont (1-0) features a pair of unbeatens.

The Cougars host a Mountie team fresh off a thrilling 21-20 win over Fountain Central in week one. North Putnam looks to get back on winning side of this border rivalry, having lost three straight in the series.

The game is unique in that it is the only regular season game a county team will play all year against an opponent from outside the newly-expanded Western Indiana Conference (WIC).

Although each team's schedule features three "non-conference" opponents, most of these match-ups are still against WIC opponents from the opposite division.

Even some county games are part of the non-conference schedule, as Cloverdale and North Putnam are in the east division, while Greencastle and South Putnam are in the west.

As a 12-team "super conference," the WIC standings are determined only by the teams' records within the east and west divisions. In week nine, the two first-place teams will play one another to determine the WIC champion. Likewise, second-place through sixth-place teams will play each other in the regular season finale.

Finally, in a battle of Eagles, South Putnam (1-0) plays host to Brown County (1-0), which defeated Edinburgh 40-12 last week.

The game breaks new ground for the two teams, as they have never met on the football field.

WGRE 91.5 will be at South Putnam's Mark Wildman Field with the live broadcast.

Elsewhere in the WIC, Edgewood (1-0) visits Northview (1-0), Cascade (0-1) hosts Monrovia, Owen Valley (1-0) hosts Indianapolis Manual, South Vermillion (0-1) hosts North Vermillion, Sullivan (1-0) travels to Linton-Stockton and West Vigo (1-0) hosts Crawfordsville.

Week three will begin the official conference portion of the season, with each team taking on a divisional rival.
