TERRE HAUTE -- In a meet consisting of some of the top cross country teams in the state, Greencastle had a good showing, particularly the girls who netted an eighth-place finish at the Terre Haute Invitational Saturday, with Emma Wilson earning the blue ribbon.

"We competed against some of the very best cross country teams in the state, eight ranked in top 25 of state and did so on the course the state tournament will be held," GHS coach Garry Anderson said. "Due to the starting time of 9:30 a.m. the temperature of 79 degrees wasn't as hot as it would be mid-day. There were 231 athletes on the starting line and when the gun went off. I feel this was a good way to see how far we have to go to reach certain goals throughout the season."

The Greencastle girls impressed Anderson with their effort in the crowded race, as they pushed their way to the front of the crowd.

"The Tiger Cub girls went out hard and fast to get up in the front of the entire group," Anderson said. "Freshman Emma Wilson continued in that fashion the entire race. She led all race from 50-70 meters in front of her nearest competitor. Emma finished first and outdistanced the second place runner, senior Katerine Free from Cathedral High School. Emma's winning time of 18:11.5 is her second best time this season. It was a very exciting race to watch and be part of."

The Lady Tiger Cubs nailed their goal of a top-10 finish and now look to work their pack running so as to lower the entire team's scores.

"The Greencastle girls team were hoping to finish in the top 10 and were very pleased to have placed eighth," Anderson said. "We are starting to get the girls to pack together more and more. Hopefully by the end of the season we can accomplish that."

The boys finished with 466 points which placed them 17th. Carmel took the top spot in the race with 49.

"We were hoping to place in the top 15 today but we fell a little short," Anderson said. "I realize this is a large measuring stick for our guys but they enjoyed seeing and competing against teams of this caliber."

He went on to say that with his young team it's nice to see his times getting lower.

"This type of competition is good for the younger ones to experience and compete in," he said. "The course was hard due to lack of rain and yet is was still a fast course. I was pleased that we had two guys finish in the top 100 in such a strong field."

Clayton Wilson was Grencastle's top finisher at 66 with a time of 17:15.2 and Cameron Lewis' time of 17:49.3 placed him at 97.

The Greencastle runners will travel next to Indianapolis to run in the Ben Davis Invite Saturday.
