Archaeology Day at Shades State Park

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

Celebrate pre-history with hands-on activities, a Miami Nation drum circle and spear throwing during Shades State Park's Archaeology Day on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Gather at the Hickory Shelter from 10 a.m. to noon to try out primitive life skills, such as basket weaving, primitive fire starting, rope making and working with clay. Work a mock archaeological dig, look at ancient artifacts and chat with an archaeologist. Utilize our stone tools collection to discover where and when they were crafted and what they were used for.

At noon, experience a Miami Nation drum circle. Chief Brian Buchanan and others will introduce attendees to this ancient ritual and invite them to perform a ritualistic dance, as well.

The events end in the atlatl throwing field with a spear throwing challenge. Meet at the parking lot along the Dell Shelter-road from 1-3 p.m. to use the aboriginal atlatl to throw spears with great force.

There is no charge for presentations or activities, though standard park entrance fees apply ($7 per Indiana car, $9 for non-residents).
