CLOVERDALE -- Putnam County has a new golf champion and the Tiger Cubs are still the County's best team.

South Putnam brought two golfers to Cloverdale's Clover Meadows for the Putnam County girls' golf tournament Thursday and Eagle Alicia Haywood earned medalist honors with a score of 42.

"I'm very excited I definitely wasn't expecting (a score of 42)," Haywood said. "I was expecting a 45, not a 42. It looks like mostly my chips and putts were working for me."

Greencastle sent all five players to the All-County team en route to a 189 team score and Putnam County title.

"I was really proud of the girls today," GHS coach Bob Hedge said. "We had some individual bests today like Gabby (Selvia) has averaged around 63 this year and she shoots a 51 which is by far a personal best. Alex (Weliever) shoots a 47. They all played really well."

Hedge said that while they missed out on the individual, the team score will give the Tiger Cubs some kind of confidence as the sectional match on Saturday at Forest Park Golf Course in Brazil grows nearer.

"Lokysa (Scheuermann) and Macey (Masten) played well but they had one bad hole," Hedge said. "That one bad hole cost Lokysa a chance at the medalist. But 189 is by far our lowest of the year. So it's coming at a good time and we hope we can just keep it going at sectional."

Cloverdale put two golfers on the All-County team Thursday with Abby Walker continuing to play well and Abbie Speas bouncing back from sickness earlier this season to earn a spot on the team.

"Overall everybody knew if Greencastle played well it'd be hard to catch up," CHS coach Matt Langdon said. "They shot a season-best tonight. On our end, you know Abbie and Abby have led us all year long. They've went back and forth one and two."

Langdon said Walker showed a great mental game after struggling on the very first hole of the day.

"She started out with an eight in the first hole," Langdon said. "She got back into it. Then she got a bogey streak going. She ended up shooting a 51 and needed every single stroke of those late to get in. Abbie Speas Lately hasn't been shooting like she wants but she came on strong. She shot a season best breaking 50 and shooting 48. It was neat to see them."

Langdon again emphasized using the experience as his team has no seniors and can grow to have bigger goals next season.

Though North Putnam had no All-County players, Cougar coach Linda Patrick said today was a better performance from her team who had experienced a tough later part of the season.

"They were doing many things well that we have worked on in practice for the last week," Patrick said. "They were taking it to the course. It's one of those things where you can practice on the course and the range but you've got to take it to the course. That wasn't happening for us. I said earlier this was the time to peak and we haven't peaked yet."

She said that even though it is a bit later than she would've liked she has started to see the confidence appear in her young Cougars.

"We should've peaked earlier but things are now beginning to click in," she said. "Some of my younger players are now saying 'Oh I can do this. Oh I have confidence now.' Those types of things beginner players struggle with a lot. That's happening here. Even though it was a loss, they are happy. They are proud of themselves."

North Putnam is the only Putnam County team traveling to Crawfordville for the sectional match Saturday at 8 a.m.

The other three will play in Brazil.
