Sheriff's Department

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department recently responded to a pair of auto accidents that resulted in driving while intoxicated charges.

* At 9:09 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to a single-vehicle personal injury accident at 8825 E. CR 200 North, Coatesville.

Deputies Stephen Smith and Mike Downing responded to the crash and found a single vehicle on the south side of the road with the driver seriously injured. During the investigation, the deputies found a second vehicle had left the scene and was located a considerable distance to the west.

Deputies had reasonable suspicion that the driver who had left the scene, Barbara L. Way, 53, Coatesville, was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. She later tested at .128 percent blood alcohol content.

Way was arrested on felony charges of operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury.

* At 10:12 a.m. on Wednesday, Kimberly A. Monnier, 41, Poland, was northbound on U.S. 231 on Plessinger's Hill in a 2013 Ford sedan. Julie A. Harrison, 51, Indianapolis, was also northbound in a 2013 Acura RDX.

The vehicles were in the area with two northbound lanes.

Despite this fact, Monnier apparently attempted to pass Harrison's vehicle by crossing over into the southbound lane.

Harrison told Deputy Riley Houghton she was in the left northbound lane, but Monnier pulled into the southbound lane. Harrison said Monnier struck her left side during the pass.

She said Monnier then sped off, continuing northbound.

Monnier told deputies she was passing Harrison's vehicle and when she went to get back into the northbound lane, her mirror made contact with Harrison's vehicle. She went on to say she continued northbound in an attempt to flee the scene.

Monnier tested at .16 BAC on the portable breath test and then at .12 on the certified test.

She was booked into the jail at 12:05 p.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident and reckless driving.

No injuries were reported.

Monnier's vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

Houghton was assisted at the scene by Lt. Dwight Simmons and Capt. Tom Helmer.
