Education is key to combating poverty

Education is a key factor in helping a person escape poverty.

Workers who have a high school diploma earn substantially more than those who do not. Those with a diploma are more likely to be eligible for jobs with growth potential and higher wages. People who hold a national industry certificate, two-year associate degree or four-year bachelor's degree are able to gain access to higher paying skilled worker positions.

In contrast, individuals living in poverty often hold several low-wage part-time positions rather than a single full-time position with benefits such as health care or retirement savings. The good news is support is available in our community to help the under resourced gain education and advanced training, so they can finally begin to escape the cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck or relying on welfare programs to care for their families.

The Indiana HSE (High School Equivalency) is an alternative credential for adults who have not yet earned a high school diploma. The HSE diploma has replaced the GED in the state of Indiana. Adult education programs, such as Area 30's Adult Ed program, provide access to free individualized instruction that focuses on the five main subject areas that are required on the HSE test (math, reading, writing, science and social studies).

The skills taught and later tested on are at the same level as those of graduating high school seniors. To assist individuals who are currently working, adult education classes are offered in morning, afternoon and evening sessions year round. This program also provides help for individuals who want to go to college, or need help researching different career paths to see what careers that are in demand.

Several national certifications can also be accessed through Area 30's Adult Education program in conjunction with WorkOne through the Department of Workforce Development.

The WorkINdiana program is designed to allow someone to train in a high demand career field at the same time as preparing to take the HSE test. In-demand certifications include CDL-A and CDL-B training, AWS welding certification, CNC Machining, CNA and several other medical certifications -- to name only a few.

These certification courses are also available to individuals who already have a high school diploma.

Our community currently has a very low level of unemployment, and many positions go unfilled due to the gap in availability of skilled labor. In addition, many companies are facing a significant number of retiring employees that fit in the high pay/high skill category. This provides an opportunity for families living in poverty and those that are just getting by to change their financial future through free education and training available close to home.
