A crushing victory 6-0 for the Greencastle girls' soccer team was bittersweet for Tiger Cubs fans as senior night meant one of the last games for six players and two managers at GHS.

After honoring their senior leaders, Greencastle proceeded to run up and down the field over Edgewood, starting off with an early goal.

"After taking the field the intensity started with a strong midfield that led to many advances and connections down the pitch," GHS coach Angie Weeks said. "Although the opponents attempted to shut down the passes, the Tiger Cubs were able to score early in the first half at the 23-minute mark."

Erin Thomas landed a goal with an assist from Katie Rose Parsons. Opportunities continued to open up for the team and Bailey Lausee earned two goals. Her first goal was assisted by Amelia Smith. A free kick taken by Parsons landed in the back of the net to bring the scoreboard to 4-0 at the half.

Weeks was very complimentary of her Tiger Cub athletes, all of whom played a part in preserving the shutout while continuing to earn goals after halftime.

"The second half brought opportunities for Lauren Harris, Gretchen Weliever, and Grace Gillen to establish a new dominance on the field," Weeks said. "A fifth goal was gained by Lausee with another assist from Smith. A final goal for the Lady Tiger Cubs was earned by Madeline Graham with an assist from Grace Gillen. Outstanding defensive plays were made by Mallary Meyer, Ruth Heithaus, Victoria Sampson, Megan Friars, Catie Anderson and Gretchen Weliever."

Before the night was over coach Weeks saw fit to let Smith grace the keeper position for a final time.

"Final debut in the goal was given to Amelia Smith with 10 minutes remaining in the game," Weeks said. "Having played in the goal for the first three years of her high school career, her return was bitter sweet. Between Claire Gillen and Smith there were no goals scored by the opponents during the game."

Greencastle now looks to the WIC crossover game Saturday at Greencastle against Cascade for a chance at the WIC title.

Both the Tiger Cub players and coaches have been focused on this match for some time and GHS will be looking to bring home the first championship of the newly aligned WIC.
