REMC Multi-County Community Trust awards $14,550 to area nonprofits

ROCKVILLE -- REMC Multi-County Community Trust has awarded grants totaling $14,550.00 to area nonprofits through its Operation Roundup Program.

The all-volunteer board granted an award to the Putnam County Giving Tree, which received $5,000 to provide assistance to Putnam County residents with food baskets and Christmas gifts for children.

Also receiving grants were:

-- Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau, which received $1,050 to help fund appreciation gifts for their volunteers.

-- Parke County 4-H Fair, which was granted $3,000 for installation of fencing around the 2014 shelterhouse to reduce damage by vehicles.

-- Rockville Elementary School, which received requested funds of $3,500 for the purchase of a new kiln for the art room.

-- The Salvation Army /Parke County Service Extension Unit was awarded $2,000 to help people with unmet basic needs and food purchases during the Christmas season.

Operation Round Up is a voluntary program set up for Parke County REMC consumers, with more than 8,000 participants agreeing to have their monthly electric billings "rounded up" to the nearest dollar.

With an average donation of around $6 per year, these contributions are then pooled, placed in the Multi-County Community Trust and awarded to worthy non-profit groups, organizations and eligible individuals within the Parke County REMC service territory which includes Putnam, Clay, Fountain, Montgomery, Parke and Vigo counties.

Grant requests are considered on a quarterly basis and the next application deadline is Monday, Jan. 4.
