Big plays not enough as Cloverdale drops one at Brown County

NASHVILLE-- Big plays kept the Clover football team going at Brown County and while it was the best offensive showing for Cloverdale all season, Brown County still took the win Friday night 39-28.

"I thought it was a good effort for the most part," Clover coach Tony Meyer said. "It was nothing to hang our hats on. But it was a solid performance. "

After a scoreless first quarter, Cloverdale was able to score twice in the second quarter to keep pace with the Eagles for a 15-14 halftime deficit.

Parker Watts had time to pass against Brown County due to the offensive pass blocking by Cloverdale and the freshman found Tyler Kaeft three times for long-distance bombs.

"They just couldn't keep up with Tyler," Meyer said. "He was open early but (Watts) was overthrowing him. But he got it calmed down."

The first bomb was a 78-yard touchdown pass, the second a 72-yarder, the third was a touchdown pass from 65 yards out.

Unfortunately for CHS, the passing game was the only thing in high gear as the visiting Clovers struggled on the ground.

"We couldn't get a run game going," Meyer said. "That put us in a jam. We couldn't run the ball so we could take advantage of some opportunities. We need to get the O-line giving the same effort on pass blocking as run blocking. Typically they'll have a harder time pass blocking than run blocking."

The only ground game seemed to come from the quarterback, Watts, who scampered for 100 yards and a touchdown. The two teams were duking it out in the fourth with quick scores coming and with Cloverdale on the comeback trail, Brown County took a well-placed onside kick and took it to the end zone.

While the Clovers played the best offensive game this season, Meyer is still looking to shore up the little mistakes as his young team shows improvement.

"We just had some untimely penalties," Meyer said. "Not that there is a good time for a penalty. But some penalties on defense just killed the momentum. But it's nothing that's unfixable, We just have to get to the practice field."

Owen Valley (5-1, 3-0 WCC) is up next for Cloverdale.
