Student groups to benefit from Cloverween event

CLOVERDALE -- While the hope is for the inaugural Cloverween event to bring the community together, the events will also benefit several Cloverdale High School student organizations.

Bonnie Helterbrand, high school athletic secretary and Student Council sponsor, said several student groups have signed up to participate in Cloverween Oct. 24 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at Cloverdale High School.

The high school has teamed up with Cloverdale Main Street and Cloverdale Action Committee for the Halloween-themed, which will feature a Monster Dash, more than 20 vendors, live entertainment, a parade and a free outdoor showing of "Beetlejuice."

Helterbrand explained each year student groups are limited to one fundraiser a year, but an exception has been made for this community-friendly event.

"We already ask for so much from the community and we don't want each group to do several fundraisers a year. But because this a community event, (principal) Mr. (Sonny) Stoltz made it to where it (the event) doesn't count as the sole fundraiser for the year," Helterbrand explained.

Among the groups participating in Cloverween festivities include Student Council, the football team, Junior Class, FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society.

Students will be putting on old-fashioned carnival games, such as ring toss, football toss, makeshift plinko, pop balloons with darts and a photo booth. The photo booth will offer both scary and kid-friendly themes.

The Junior Class Parents will be selling T-shirts for $7. Helterbrand noted shirt sales are just for commemorating the event and are not a money-making venture.

Speaking on behalf of the Student Council, Helterbrand said the students are really excited for the event. While trying to pin down the exact events for the evening, she said students keep wanting to add more.

"Several of them are going to wear costumes just because they are so excited," Helterbrand added.

Helterbrand said she hopes Cloverween sparks a new, old-fashioned tradition in the town.

Several vendors will feature handmade items, including goat's milk soaps and lotions, Halloween and Thanksgiving-themed items, photography, knickknacks, American Girl doll clothes and more. Entertainment will start at 11:30 a.m. with Upward Journey, followed by comedian Jeff Davis at 1:30 p.m., Chris Wurster at 2 p.m., Rockology at 3 p.m. and Saturday Shoes at 4:30 p.m.

Cloverdale resident Lita Sandy will be featured as the parade marshal of the Masquerade Parade, starting at 1 p.m.
