GHS student wins Grand National title

Danny Williams of Greencastle High School won the sub-junior division in handicap trapshooting at the Grand National Championships in recently. Williams, a member of the Roachdale Claybusters, shot a 99 out of 100 targets.

In day one of the singles event, where 200 single targets would be shot over two days, Williams shot a perfect 100 straight birds and kept his chances alive to win the high overall singles championship adding onto his handicap trophy.

When day two came around for the final 100 targets Williams started right where he left off and broke the first 50 birds. It was not until the 56th bird that he he missed his first target. That was the only target he missed and finished with a total of 199 out of 200 targets broken.

The score that Williams tallied was good enough to win the overall championship in the Sub-Junior A Class and it also allowed him to be in a shoot-off for the high overall singles champion. He finished third.

Overall, it was a good showing for the sophomore. The event was held in Sparta, Ill., at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex. At the complex there is three-and-a-half miles of trap houses, several skeet ranges and a sporting clays range. Shooting events are held there all throughout the year.

Williams marks the third member of the Claybusters to win an event at the Grand Nationals in the last two years.
