CLOVERDALE -- A Cloverdale woman is in Putnam County Jail after fleeing during a traffic stop Friday night.

Cloverdale Deputy Marshal Mark Hoppus initiated a traffic stop around 8:30 p.m. Friday on Donna M. Byrd, 48.

Hoppus had Byrd stopped on County Road 1200 South, in the area of State Road 42, to investigate a possible intoxicated driver. But, as the officer tried to approach the vehicle a second time, Byrd fled in her pick-up truck.

Deputy Marshal Hoppus followed the driver onto State Road 42, but Byrd had trouble keeping her vehicle on the pavement as she reached speeds of 75 mph on the winding road.

Cloverdale Town Marshal Mike Clark explained as the pursuit continued, Byrd left the roadway and caused her vehicle to go left of the center line multiple times.

The pursuit continued into the Cunot area in Owen County on State Road 42, but once again Byrd lost control of the vehicle, causing her to drive into a yard.

Hoppus was able to detain Byrd at gunpoint while he awaited back up from the Cloverdale Police Department and Owen County Sheriff's Department.

Byrd was transported to the jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction and resisting law enforcement with the use of a vehicle, both Level 6 felonies.

The truck in which she used to flee was impounded.
