Options for handling tighter margins workshop planned

Sunday, November 8, 2015

During 2014 and 2015, the agricultural climate has changed. Prior to now, farmers experienced a time where gross revenues were high. Now the climate has changed and operating margins are getting tighter requiring farmers to rethink some of their marketing strategies and rental arrangements.

Program resources should provide benefits to farmers who are looking for ways to adjust to the tightening margins by changing marketing strategies and addressing changes in rental arrangements. Program outline includes a look at the current agriculture climate, commodity marketing strategies, and a discussion about the long term rental decision.

Extension educators Summer Long, from Clay/Owen Extension, and Jenna Nees, from Putnam Extension, will conduct the workshops. Rob Huston, director of risk management with Gavilon, will be discussing commodity marketing strategies during the workshop. The goals of the workshop are to assist farmers with addressing the various issues that are brought on by the tight margins they are experiencing.

Purdue Extension will offer in November program in Putnam County to provide farmers with strategies for handling the tight margins caused by the current agriculture climate. The Options for Handling Tighter Margins workshop will take place Monday, Nov. 16 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in Greencastle from 6-8 p.m. Advanced registration is requested by calling 653-8411. Please register by Nov. 11.
