Glenn E. Welliver

Glenn Edwin Welliver, fifth son of the Rev. Lester A. Welliver and Eleanor Yeaworth Welliver, died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, at home in Berryville, Va.

Born in Baltimore, Md., on Feb. 20, 1933, he attended schools in Central Pennsylvania before graduating from high school in Westminster, Md. He graduated with high honors from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1955. He spent the junior year in Heidelberg, Germany, with an adventurous spring motorcycle trip through Austria and Yugoslavia to Greece, returning up the Italian peninsula.

Professor Welliver received his Ph.D. in German from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., after serving for two years in the U.S. Army and assuming a position as instructor for German at DePauw University, Greencastle.

In 1958 he married Edith Bean, a college classmate, who survives him. They have one son, Ralph Martin Welliver, who, with his wife Jennifer and two grandchildren, lives in Berryville, Va. Two brothers, Kenneth and Paul Welliver, also survive him.

For 38 years he continued to teach in the German department at DePauw, concentrating on German culture and literature in addition to innovative language instruction.

On sabbatical leaves in German-speaking areas, he focused on theater arts as a response to contemporary issues. He developed a course on German drama and film. Just after German unification, he was able to spend a summer traveling in the former East Germany. From 1983 until his retirement in 1999, he served as department chair in addition to carrying a full teaching schedule.

A family memorial service will be held in Virginia with burial in the United Methodist cemetery in Churchtown, Pa.

Memorial gifts, in the spirit of his several philanthropic interests, may go to a cause of the donor's choice.
