CLOVERDALE -- Rebounding and missed free throws plagued the Cloverdale girls when they took on Shakamak Saturday. The Clovers were faced with a much taller Laker team and CHS had a chance to get the win late but never managed to pull into the lead and lost 47-36.

The Cloverdale girls' had been emphasizing their effort to get the ball into the paint, however the size of the Lady Lakers proved problematic, especially when freshman forward Tori Combs was on the bench.

Cloverdale coach Matt Langdon was disappointed with the foul shooting of the Lady Clovers, who went 2-13 for the game as well as the rebounding which resulted in several putback opportunities for Shakamak.

"The good news is that those are easy fixes," Langdon said. "We're not talking about shooting percentage or anything like that. We are talking about a mindset. 'I'm going to win some individual battles inside and not let this girl get these rebounds.'"

The Clovers were down 17-11 and went on a run just before halftime to make the score 21-18 Lakers.

Mariah Huge stood tough in defense against the tall front court of Shakamak, bodying up the tall Shakamak center Kiera Samm and taking a physical charge to help CHS in closing the gap.

The biggest difference in the game was Tori Combs whose three-quarter effort yielded 11 rebounds.

Unfortunetely Huge had to sit much of the second half with foul trouble and even with Kelsey Helterbrand jetting around the court defensively and earning 4 steals, the Lady Lakers just proved too much and were able to keep the Clovers at an arms reach away for the second half.

"We had good minutes from the bench again with the younger girls," Langdon said. "There were many positives from the game. We got some open looks even though they didn't fall. We got to the free throw line, that's something we don't always do. The press looked better than it has, at the end forcing some turnovers. It just becomes about being able to do the little things to get over that hump."

Cloverdale (0-4) will next play in the Putnam County Tournament Friday against South Greencastle (3-1) in the first game at 6 p.m.
