Callan Taylor leads Pomeroys in win

TERRE HAUTE -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team defeated Earlham College on Tuesday to improve to 4-3 on the year. The Pomeroys downed the Quakers 96-88, breaking EC's two-game win-streak against SMWC.

Five Pomeroys finished the night in double figures with Greencastle graduate freshman Callan Taylor leading the way with 17 points. Senior Grace Ziegler added 15 points, while freshman Kaley Sosnowski added 13, junior Mikayla Kinneer tallied 12 points and sophomore Tara Parmer scored 11.

Juniors Na-Shaunda Rayford and Ja'Breena Gardner led the team in rebounding with six each. Defensively, Parmer recorded five steals, while freshman Jessica Wagers notched four blocks.

Tuesday's game saw eight lead changes and four ties as both sides kept it close throughout. The Pomeroys found themselves down early, 13-5, but they rallied back to pull within two before EC made another run to close the first quarter with a 30-20 advantage. The second half saw SMWC trail by as many as 13, but free throws and 3-point shooting kept SMWC in the game as they went into the break trailing 43-40.

With 7:58 on the clock in the third quarter, SMWC tied the game up at 45 and then took the lead, 48-45, a minute and half later off a 3-pointer by Taylor. From there, the score would be tied up twice with EC holding a 66-65 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Pomeroys jumped out to a 78-68 lead with 6:58 to play. SMWC then moved its lead to 83-70 with 5:20 to play. EC tried to come back on several occasions, but key shots in the final minutes sealed SMWC's 96-88 victory.

The Pomeroys will be back in action on Dec. 2 when they host Robert Morris-Peoria in Hamilton Arena at the Knoerle Center. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
