County Jail

Several people have been booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, Benjamin Earl Cash, 27, Greencastle, was arrested on a warrant.

* At 10:55 p.m. on Thursday, Wesley Hoover, 42, no city listed, was lodged at the jail on a traffic warrant.

At 10:55 p.m. Kyle Anderson Pedigo, 28, Cloverdale, was housed at the jail on a warrant for probation violation.

* At 6:08 p.m. on Friday, Jessica Marie Phares, 42, Greencastle, was charged with theft.

* At 1:35 a.m. on Saturday, Joseph Nichols Gast, 31, Greencastle, was booked in for dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

* At 12:10 a.m. Monday, James Means Jr., 31, Greencastle, was arrested for intimidation.

At 11:07 p.m. Joshua Scott McCormack, 31, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on a warrant.

* At 2:36 a.m. Tuesday, Nicholas Eugene Weddell, 34, Fillmore, was housed at the jail on a traffic warrant.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies have responded to eight recent traffic accidents.

* At 5:36 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, Marjean J. Smiley, 77, Rockville, was westbound on U.S. 36 in the area of County Road 475 West in a 2002 Toyota Highlander when she hit a deer.

Deputy Anthony Brown estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500. The vehicle was towed.

* At 4:37 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, Mark Bennett, 45, Poland, was eastbound on State Road 42 approaching County Road 1275 South in a 2006 Ford F150 when he hit a deer.

Deputy Virgil Lanning estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 5:36 a.m. on Wednesday, Ashley N. Barnett, 28, Harmony, was eastbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 475 East in a 2010 Dodge Journey when she hit a deer.

Deputy Mike Downing estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

* At 10:18 p.m. on Thursday, Travis A. Harmon, 30, Plainfield, was eastbound on U.S. 40 near Manhattan Road in a 2003 Ford SE when he hit a deer.

Deputy Kyle Gibbons estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 8:20 a.m. on Saturday, Wendi R. Evans, 40, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 approaching County Road 25 South in a 2012 Toyota Camry. Chase Joshua Levi Albers, 18, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 preparing to turn west onto County Road 25 West in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am.

Evans told Capt. Tom Helmer she saw Albers turning into her path but could not avoid the collision.

Albers said he at first did not see Evans' vehicle and began to turn. By the time he saw Evans approaching, Alberts turned back to the right but his left front hit the left side of Evan's car.

There were no injuries.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Kathy I. Gilbert, 52, Quincy, was eastbound on Interstate 70 in a 2008 Toyota Rav4.

A witness who was some distance behind Gilbert told Capt. Helmer the vehicle drove off the travel portion of the road, crossed the right shoulder and hit a guardrail.

The vehicle then veered back into traffic, at which time it's right rear tire deflated. This cause the vehicle to roll over before coming to a stone on its wheels, facing west in the eastbound lanes.

Gilbert's vehicle was transporting five dogs, four of which were in cases. The witness believed that the dog that was unrestrained may have contributed to Gilbert losing control.

Gilbert was shaken up, but signed a medical release from Operation Life.

Deputy Anthony Brown and the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department also provided assistance at the scene.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 2:43 a.m. on Sunday, Franklin M. Lenihan, 21, Brazil, was westbound on U.S. 40 approaching the Putnamville Indiana State Police post in a 2006 Honda Civic when he hit a deer.

Deputy Lanning estimated damage as $1,0001-$2,500. The car had to be towed.

* At 7:05 p.m. on Sunday, Lauren Stonehill, 18, Granger, was westbound on U.S. 36 approaching Bainbridge in a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle when he hit a deer.

Deputy Lanning estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500. The car was towed.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to six dispatches and one medical run.

* At 12:29 a.m. on Tuesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm believed to be set off by a candle at 504 E. Seminary St.

* At 9:55 a.m. on Tuesday, GFD responded to a gas leak at 412 W. Washington St. No gas leak was ultimately found.

* At 5:07 a.m. Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 602 S. College Ave. GFD was did not locate any problems.

* At 4:03 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD assisted in the cleanup of an overturned semi-trailer carrying hazardous materials at the intersection of US 41 and Coxville Rd. in Parke County.

* At 5:53 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 412 S. Jackson St.

* At 3 a.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm that was believed to be set off by an activated fire extinguisher at 807 S. College Ave.
