Alice E. Shumaker

Alice E. (Waggener) Shumaker, a former resident of Cloverdale, died peacefully on Oct. 26, 2015 at the age of 99, after a long illness.

Born in New Castle to Wiley and Dell Bridges Waggener, she graduated from New Castle High School and moved to Indianapolis to pursue a secretarial career. There she was active in Indiana Baptist Youth activities and the First Baptist Church, where she met and married her husband, E.J. "Joy" Shumaker, a native of Eminence.

They had a son, David, and moved to the Philadelphia area, where Joy took a position as personnel director with the American Baptist Convention. Alice later became a secretary at the Church Farm School, a school for orphaned and disadvantaged boys in Exton, Pa.

In 1978, Alice and Joy retired to Cloverdale, where they joined Amity Baptist Church and were active in many religious and service organizations, including the Indiana Baptist Convention, Masons/Eastern Star, Gideons International and others.

Upon Joy's death, Alice relocated to Hoosier Village in Indianapolis.

In addition to her son, she is survived by daughter-in-law Donna, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Homes of Indiana Foundation, 5415 Bearberry Lane, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
