Clovers sweep Cougars
ROACHDALE--It was hard fought in both games but both the Cloverdale girls' and boys' basketball teams got the job done on the road at North Putnam Friday night.
The CHS girls won the first game 48-42 and the boys won 61-54.
"Credit to North Putnam and their coach," CHS coach Matt Langdon said. "He had them ready to play tonight. I thought tonight was a great team win for us. We had a nice rotation of 8 girls who I thought all contributed in big ways. We kept our composure late when they tied it up and the girls did what was needed to pull out the win. It was nice to get a conference win under our belt and will begin preparing for another big conference game next Friday against Brown County."
In the girl's game the Clovers (4-7 1-1 WIC) had as much as a lead as 10-point but the Cougars (2-9 0-3 WIC) kept slimming that down until 1.4 seconds left in the first half when Shelby Suding hit two free throws to make the score 22-21. The problem was in 1.4 seconds a half-court toss to Abby Walker ended up in three free throws with no time left because a Cougar defender ran into her as she was heaving up a shot. She made two of the three free throws to put her team up by three at the half.
The Cougars tied the game up in the fourth quarter with 3:45 remaining, but the Clovers followed on a quick 7-0 run. Tori Combs had two points in that span and Kelsey Helterbrand capped it off with two free throws after Taylor Nauert missed an open layup.
Suding cut the lead to three for the Cougars with 42.8 seconds remaining off a pass from from Nauert and she had a chance to cut it to one but missed the same shot from the same spot on the next possession.
The last chance the Cougars had was with 3.5 seconds remaining and down five. Emilee Henninger was on the line for the Cougars for two shots and she had to make both, then her team had to steal the inbounds pass and make a three. She missed both free throws.
Nauert did not have a single first-half point for the Cougars, but she had 15 in the second half despite being in foul trouble most of the way. She picked up two fouls in the first quarter. Suding had 12 points.
Combs led the way for the Clovers with 16 points and Helterbrand had 11.
In the boys' game the Cougars (0-4 0-2 WIC) came out attacking hard, especially on the defensive side of the court. They took a 14-11 lead going into the second quarter.
It was Cooper Neese's turn to take over to start the second quarter for the Clovers (4-2 1-1 WIC). Neese, who committed to Butler University earlier this week, hit two threes to end the first half with nine points. Neese ended up with 30 for the game. Five of those were three-pointers, two of which came in the third quarter to put the Clovers up by double digits.
The Cougars had the lead cut down to four in the fourth quarter but the free throw effort of Neese and sophomore Jalen Moore put the Cougars out of the game. The two combined for the team total of 12 of 13 from the line. Moore had 13 total points and six assists. He also had seven rebounds.
Free throws were the big issue for the Cougars as they only went 8 of 15 from the line
Sophomore Treyton Smith kept the Cougars in the game, especially down the stretch when he hit two clutch three pointers. He was three-of-four from behind the arc and four of six from the field for 11 points. Austin Judy led the Cougars in scoring with 14 but only scored three points in the second half. Jordan Bean had 12 points and seven boards.
The Clover boys' team will travel to Monrovia tonight for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The Cougars have tonight off before they host Edgewood on Friday.
The Clover girls do not play again until Friday when they host Brown County. The Cougars will host North Vermillion on Tuesday.
