The Greencastle girls' basketball team took on a West Division rival in South Putnam Friday night in what was a rematch of the double-overtime championship game during the Putnam County Tournament won by the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle was coming off a 21-point loss at Danville on Tuesday and wanted to have a good showing and the Tiger Cubs accomplished their goal, defeating the Eagles 57-33.

"We had a rough night over at Danville on Tuesday," GHS Brad Key said. "We got away from some of the principles that made us a pretty good basketball team. Across the board we played pretty bad against Danville. So we watched film and had some tough practices. You want to win every game but tonight we wanted to make sure we played a better brand of basketball."

Greencastle started off hot, going up 12-4 and defense was key. GHS had 14 takeaways with a defensive zone putting pressure on the Eagles and making it difficult to pass for South Putnam.

"Tonight Greencastle just outplayed us. They did the things that they do very well," Eagle coach Brian Gardner said. "Tonight is a classic of example of when things start to go well for them, you've got to combat their runs. We didn't combat those runs, and that's got to be solely on me."

South Putnam did what it could to battle in the physical game. Miranda Beighler backed in a last-second three to make the score 12-7 before the second.

However after GHS senior Mia Stevens got into a groove offensively, the Eagles had a tough time defending Greencastle.

"My seniors were big on making sure everybody was on the same page dialing the ball in the middle," Key said. "It really kind of sparked our whole game. They realized that we dropped an egg over at Danville and we had to get it corrected. Those three (Beth Bergeson, Paige Bragg and Allison White) did and everyone else fell in line."

South Putnam was down 31-19 at the half and the lead only grew as Stevens got good shots in the second, which only opened up more shots for senior Allison White in the third.

"All three of them mean so much to our team," Key said. "If you took just one away we'd be a completely different team. I'm super proud of them. They bought in. The younger girls are looking up to them."

South Putnam (6-2 1-0 WIC) will have the rest of the weekend off and then will take on its WIC non-divisional rival Owen Valley (5-3 1-0 WIC).

GHS (9-2 1-0 WIC) will have will have a slightly longer break before Rockville (2-7) on Wednesday at McAnally.
