DPU sweeps Oberlin at home

Four players scored in double figures as the DePauw men's basketball team defeated Oberlin 75-66 for its first North Coast Athletic Conference win on the season while ending a three-game losing streak in the process. The DPU women stayed perfect in the NCAC against Oberlin and extended their win streak to four with a 63-45 victory.

The DePauw women's basketball team never trailed in its North Coast Athletic Conference home opener. The Lady Tigers moved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while the Yeowomen dropped to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference. The win was also DePauw's 96th straight home regular season conference win.

The Tigers closed the opening stanza with a 13-2 run to take a 20-7 lead at the quarter break and then opened the second quarter with a 4-0 run to grab a 24-7 advantage. Oberlin trimmed the halftime margin to 11 at 32-21.

Oberlin got no closer than 11 in the second half as the Tigers led by as many as 19 later in the fourth.

DePauw's Emily Budde led all scorers with 21 points, while Melinda Franke topped Wednesday's career-high rebound performance by hauling down 11 today. Franke and Maya Howard each added nine points while Claire Ryan led with four assists and five steals.

Tyler Parlor paced Oberlin with 12 points and three steals with Connie Estevez grabbing seven rebounds and Caroline Hamilton dishing out three assists.

DePauw shot 39.3 percent from the floor, while Oberlin connected on 39.1 percent from the field. The Tigers held a 38-27 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to Oberlin's 22. DePauw held a 21-8 lead in points off turnovers.

David Vogel paced the way for the men's team with a career-high 20 points and a career-high nine rebounds. John Starkey and Luke Lattner added 14 points, and Jack VandeMerkt posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

DePauw (3-5, 1-2 NCAC) held a slim 29-28 lead at the half but Vogel, Lattner and VandeMerkt scored 32 of the team's 46 second-half points to pull ahead. The Tigers led by as many as 14 and battled back from an eight-point deficit in the first half.

Oberlin (6-4, 2-3 NCAC) was led by Nathan Cohen's 17 points. Eli Silverman-Lloyd scored 14 points off the bench, and Zach Meyers scored 10 points.

DePauw effectively established their post play, outscoring Oberlin 36-20 in points in the paint and by out-rebounding the Yeomen 45-35. They benefited from center Randy Ollie's early exit, as DePauw scored 20 of its 36 points in the pain in the second half.

Ollie, a 6-foot-10-inch 240-pound senior from Evanston, Ill., fouled out midway through the second half with 11:13 remaining. He was called for his fourth personal foul and then immediately drew the technical foul from voicing his disagreement of the call.

The Tigers led 48-44 before the call and took off shortly after with an 11-3 run that stretched a five-point game to 13 with just over two minutes remaining.

DePauw shot 44 percent (27-of-61) from the floor, 32 percent from three-point range (6-of-19) and 60 percent from the foul line (15-of-25). Oberlin shot 34 percent (22-of-64) for the game, 31 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-29) and 52 percent from the foul line (13-of-25).

Mason Hankins added eight points for the Tigers on 3-of-3 shooting. Clint Cunningham scored seven and Cris Burrough added two points from off the bench to round out the team's scoring.

Adam Botts played in his first game of the season after sitting out the first seven games with an injury. In his nine minutes, he recorded six rebounds.

The Lady Tigers host the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic on Dec. 28-29 and will face Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. The Tiger men are off for two weeks but will return to action at the Tampa Bay Shootout on Dec. 29.
