CLOVERDALE -- The Greencastle junior varsity girls' basketball team captured the JV Putnam County Championship last Saturday with a 52-24 win over South Putnam.

It wasn't close in either game for the Tiger Cubs, as they defeated the host Clovers 38-15 in the opening game.

"It was very exciting being able to win with the team in my first year," GHS coach Maggie Walters said. "They're a fun group to coach -- they work hard and they're competitive.

Walters was impressed with how her team handled the tournament opener against the Clovers, an unfamiliar opponent this early in the season.

"It can be hard going in to a tournament and starting with a team that you haven't played because you don't really know what to expect," Walters said. "But our girls do a nice job of getting a sense for teams and adjusting to a team's system of play."

The team followed that up with some impressive defense against the Eagles in the title game.

"In the championship game, our team did a nice job of playing tough defense and that gave us the ability to pull away," Walters said.

"Our girls move the ball pretty well and that's something coach (Bradley) Key stresses to his varsity a lot -- move the ball and find the good shot," Walters said. "So it's good to see at the JV level that the players are learning that aspect of the game."
