Cubs, Cougars take county win

History was made Saturday as the Putnam County swim teams from Greencastle, North Putnam, and South Putnam faced off in the first-ever December coed county swim championship.

Greencastle came away as the champion of the girls' meet with 281 points, while North Putnam came away with the win in the boys' meet with 242 points.

The Cougar win came down to the final relay to determine the outcome where Nick Young, Bailey Allen, Jonah Creamean and Joseph Davis took the victory in the 400-yard relay.

The Eagle ladies took second while NPHS earned third. The GHS boys took second with the Eagles earning third.

Two meet records were set, both including Mallory Meyer from Greencastle. Meyer first broke Kelsey Murtagh's eight-year-old 100 fly record with a time of 1:03.60, then just 30 minutes later was part of the record setting 200-free relay team also including Amelia Smith, Sydney Lewis, and Corrie Romer. The new time of 1:47.23 took nearly four seconds off the previous record set nine years ago by Ashley Allred, Erica Collins, Morgan Terry and Erica Soster.

Corrie Romer had a good showing with first-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

"The senior girls continued their strong performances, including multiple event wins for Mallory (200 free, 100 fly), Amelia (100 breast), and Corrie (50 and 100 free," GHS coach Kent Menzell said. "I was also very happy to see the wins produced by sophomore Grace Gillen (500 free) and freshman Abby Meyer (100 back)."

For South Putnam Megan Arnold won the women's 200 Yard IM, Maddison Plunkett took first in diving, Zack Rayce won the 100-yard backstroke.

The Greencastle diving team swept the competition with first, second and third-place finishes.

"I was extremely happy to see the 1-2-3 finish from divers Jake Bennett, Gus Manion, and DJ Smiley," Menzel said. "These three have been working extremely hard and knew their best efforts were needed to keep us in the meet. I was also very impressed by the leadership offered to our team by Nathan Gobert, who swam awesome times all day long. We have worked hard this fall and definitely look forward to some rest, recovery, and Christmas cookies."
