CLOVERDALE -- The Greencastle and Cloverdale girls' basketball teams were neck and neck after one quarter before the Lady Tiger Cubs pulled away in a 64-38 Greencastle win Tuesday.

Cloverdale took the lead in the second quarter behind some nice shooting by Haley Hamm who scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half.

"It was a great start for us," CHS coach Matthew Langdon said. "That's something we've been working on. We haven't played many good first quarters especially against Greencastle. We played them at County and at halftime we were down at least double digits, probably much more. So we did exactly what we wanted to do."

Langdon said Tiger Cub coach Brad Key made some adjustments and his Clovers had a tougher time making plays as the game went on.

After a 13-13 tie after one quarter, GHS scored 14 in the second to Cloverdale's five.

"Our defense started to tighten up a bit better in the second quarter," Key said. "We allowed too many easy baskets. Give credit to Cloverdale. Haley Hamm shot the ball really well. When they do that they stretch us out a bit more."

The Tiger Cubs benefited from a variety of players on the offensive end with Aubrey Barker, Nailah Ray and Allison White netting double figures.

"Mia (Stevens) got into some foul trouble and Nailah Ray came off the bench," Key said. "I thought she played great tonight. When we needed Allison White she stepped up. And Aubrey Barker had some good steals to get us going in the second and third quarters."

GHS scored 18 and 19 in the third and fourth to Cloverdale's 10 in each.

"We just weren't able to make the plays in the second half," Langdon said. "You cannot have any letdown. A letdown against Greencastle is a 10 or 15 burst. For another team it may be a couple baskets. So it got a little out of hand. But for us to have the lead in the second quarter against Greencastle is something we haven't seen."

Langdon went on to say that while his Clovers are not content with their play, he does recognize the improvement CHS is showing.

"I think we exceed expectations from early in the season," Langdon continued. "Now we need to figure out how to put four quarters together. So we can get some more W's on the board."

Cloverdale (4-8, 1-2 WIC will next play in the Monrovia Tournament on Dec. 28 while Greencastle (13-2, 3-0 WIC) will enjoy two weeks off before taking on its WIC Western Division rival Northview (7-5, 2-1 WIC).
