DPU earns win in Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament
A strong second half defensively for the DePauw women's basketball team ended a stalemate and earned the Lady Tigers a decisive victory against Heidelberg 66-51 in the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic.
Amy E. Hasbrook, a 2000 graduate of DePauw, was killed Feb. 2002 in an early morning fire at the northside Indianapolis home of her parents.
The proceeds from the tournament benefit the People's Burn Foundation of Indianapolis in Amy's memory.
DePauw came out strong early in the first quarter jumping to an 11-2 lead before Heildelberg managed to fight back.
DePauw managed a sizable lead until the Student Princes went on a 7-3 run to end the first quarter 19-14 in favor of DePauw.
Into the second the Student Princes managed to tie the game at 27 before Maya Howard made a three-pointer for the Tigers.
Colleen Connors added another one from long distance but Heidelberg was able to stay on par with DePauw and the score was knotted at 34 at halftime.
The second half saw a few easy buckets for the home team, as many steals led to layups for the Tigers. The consistent defense allowed DPU to gradually pull away leading up to the fourth quarter.
"We changed up our ball screens on defense," Tiger coach Kris Huffman said. "We also had a little more on-ball pressure so we were able to be more disruptive with our defense."
Heildelberg managed to get within 10 points in the fourth against the home team before Huffman called a timeout and DPU came out with a 7-0 run to get back on top.
The win in the tournament comes after DePauw stormed back against Wis.-Eau Claire Monday only to fall just short in a 55-50 loss. Huffman was glad the way her Tigers competed in both games and was happy to see them earn the win Tuesday.
"We played this game in Amy Hasbrook's memory," Huffman said. "It was good to get the win in a way that she played the game; with heart and effort."
The Lady Tigers (8-3) will next be in action on Jan. 2 at Allegheny.
The five-member all-classic team included:
Emily Budde, DePauw
Lauren DeSutter, Franklin
Madison Johnson, UW-Eau Claire
Teenie Lichtfuss, UW-Eau Claire
Carli Patrick, Heidelberg
