Michael Everett Carter Sr., 77, of Heritage Lake, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2016 at his residence after a two-month battle with cancer.

Michael was born in Reelsville on Nov. 15, 1938 to Dorothy V. Wisemiller and George W. Carter Sr.

Michael attended Greencastle High School and at the age of 15 went to work as a farmhand for a local farming operation.

He then worked for more than 12 years at the Greencastle stockyards before going to work for General Motors in 1968. He retired from General Motors with 38 years of service.

He was a proud member of the UAW Local 23.

Michael possessed the gift of gab and was never without a story or a friend. He enjoyed camping, boating, water skiing, fishing, dirt track racing and listening to traditional country music.

Michael throughout his life often made decisions by an internal compass of simply trying to do the right thing. This led to him taking on the role of caregiver, parent or a shoulder to lean upon for many. This compassion and selflessness and its lasting effects on others is his enduring legacy.

Michael is survived by his significant other of nearly 30 years, Louise Carter; son Matthew Carter (Jessica); daughter Rita Carter Woodrum Day (David); daughter-in-law Sally Carter; stepdaughter Sheila Anderson (Bob); sister-in-law Marsha Carter; grandchildren Kimberly Stutler (Josh), Jamie Pursell (Marc), Nikki Nunnally (Benjamin), and his best buddy, two-year-old Miles Carter. He is additionally survived by many loving great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother George W. Carter and his son, Michael E. Carter Jr.

A gathering of friends and family in celebration of Michael's life will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 31 from 1-4 p.m. at the Bainbridge Community Center.

In lieu of flowers or contributions the family requests you simply perform a gesture of kindness for someone else in need.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Michael's many caring neighbors, the Floyd Township Fire Department, and those involved with Michael's care at Hendricks Regional Health, Intrepid Hospice and Indiana Home Care Plus.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Costin Funeral Chapel/Southern Indiana Cremation Society.
