Point-in-Time Count of homelessness scheduled Wednesday

Friday, January 22, 2016

Every January communities across the country participate in the annual Point in Time Count to get a snapshot of what homelessness looks like on a particular day.

The count, required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and organized in Indiana by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), aims to count all persons experiencing homelessness who are residing in emergency shelters and transitional housing or who are living in a place not meant for human habitation, such as vehicles, abandoned buildings or parks.

Beyond Homeless will be coordinating the count in Putnam County this year.

Anyone who is experiencing homelessness, whether they choose to seek services or not, hopefully will choose to participate in the short survey that will help ensure the picture of homelessness in the Greencastle/Putnam County community is represented accurately.

From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Beyond Homeless will have staff on site to conduct surveys. All individuals experiencing homelessness who participate will receive a care package of basic necessities. Resource referral information will also be available for those who would like to consider further support.

Beyond Homeless is located at 309 E. Franklin St. in the Community Hub building.

Anyone who has further questions or needs may contact Beyond Homeless at 765-301-9263 or connect through email at beyondhomelessincorporated@gmail.com or like Beyond Homeless on Facebook.

The Beyond Homeless mission is to respond to the needs of neighbors in the Putnam County region who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming homeless because of poverty.

BHI has a 30-day shelter program that provides emergency housing for single women and women with children. Additionally it offers limited financial assistance through its homeless prevention program. Recognizing that homelessness is not solely an issue for women, BHI also offers a limited short-term hotel voucher program for men.
