ROACHDALE-- The North Putnam Cougars girls' basketball team faced off with the South Vermillion Wildcats on Friday night in the 11th-place game in the newly formed Western Indiana Conference game. The Wildcats won the game 55-49.

The loss saw North Putnam (3-17, 0-6 WIC) finish 12th in conference on the year, going 0-6 in conference play. The Wildcats (5-16, 1-5 WIC) improved to 1-5 in conference play.

The Cougars were looking forward to the matchup and they came out firing from the field. They took 19 shots in the first quarter but only four fell. In the second quarter the Cougars got hot making five of the 12 shots they took.

The big reason the Cougars trailed just 25-19 at the half was because of their work on the offensive boards. They had 15 offensive rebounds in the first half. Meanwhile the Wildcats only had 16 total rebounds in the half.

At the end of the second quarter senior Madisyn Smith got hot and hit two big shots to cut the lead at the break and make the deficit manageable going into the second half.

The Cougars came out hot and had a chance to tie the game with a free throw, but it missed and the Wildcats pulled back up to a four-point lead going into the last frame.

The third quarter was high-scoring as the teams traded buckets back and forth and no team could get much momentum going.

The fourth quarter was much of the same for both teams, once the Cougars made a shot the Wildcats answered.

North Putnam did cut the lead to three points twice in the fourth but the Wildcats each time answered back with a bucket of their own.

Once the game got to under two minutes, the Cougars started to foul and the Wildcats pulled away by hitting their all of their free throws.

North Putnam cut the lead to 53-47 with 18 seconds left and then fouled quickly. The Wildcats missed the front end of the one-and-one and senior Taylor Nauert made a layup on the other end with eight seconds to play to cut the Wildcat lead to 53-49.

South Vermillion got the ball in cleanly and made both free throws to win the game 55-49.

North Putnam will play again next Tuesday night as it travels to Turkey Run,
