CLOVERDALE -- A hot shooting night on Tucker Court for the Cloverdale girls' basketball team led to a big win over South Putnam in the WIC crossover game for ninth place Friday night.

The Clovers held on to a large halftime lead to win 68-46.

Cloverdale's Tori Cobs set the tone early in the first quarter with a forceful block and that may have been the spark that led to the offensive output for CHS.

The Clovers used an inside-out game, moving the ball into paint to draw contact and kicking it out to shooters when the Eagles collapsed.

The game plan was working early as CHS went perfect on six foul shots and scored 16 in the opening quarter.

South Putnam was looking to get the ball inside and managed eight points but missed four shots from the free throw line.

The second quarter was key for CHS, which took advantage of eight first-half assists from Payton Dorsett, six in the second quarter, to score 24 points from the field.

Abby Walker and Haley Hamm both nailed a three in the first quarter and both knocked down two more in the second.

"What we've got to do when somebody gets hot like that is to push them off the three-point line and do some different things," Eagle coach Brian Gardner said. "We did some different things. It just seemed like every time we tried to do something different, they continued to hit shots."

Both Clovers also added another from the floor and Payton Dorsett scored a bucket with the foul, to add to the Clovers' 24-pont second quarter. Huge went two-for three in the second.

"Sometimes, not many times, but sometimes you are at a loss for words as a coach," Clover coach Matt Langdon said. "You have one of those nights. We had one of those special nights shooting."

South Putnam was able to get eight points in the second and while the Lady Eagles had some success getting shots to fall, it was tough to combat Cloverdale.

"You've got to give credit to Cloverdale," Gardner said. "I don't know what they shot in the first half but they were hitting everything they threw up. Every time they did miss it seemed like they got an offense rebound and a putback."

The game grew more physical in the second half as South Putnam was determined to stay competitive after the 40-16 deficit.

"The first thing you've got to do is compete like we did in the second half," Gardner said. "Especially in the third quarter we actually got a lot of good looks off steals and we missed some layups. When you are down as much as we are and you've got to make that comeback, you can't have those misses in there. But I'm proud of the way the girls played in the second half. They really fought."

Despite the missed opportunities South Putnam did win the third quarter with nine points, five from Miranda Bieghler who knocked down a three. But the Clovers kept the Eagles at a distance, scoring eight with Combs scoring five, including a three that she knocked down from the corner.

"We didn't tell them that we had to have the same second half," Langdon said. "But we said that passion has to be there. A lot of times when you are up sometimes the defense will give a little bit. Sometimes if you play solid defense for a half, with that type of lead they are not going to be able to make it up."

The fourth quarter was the most physical of the game as 31 foul shots were shot between the two teams.

Dorsett made the most of her opportunities as she continually attacked the rim. She knocked down 7-of-11 foul shots earning an and one. Dorsett finished with 10 assists and 12 points.

"We were just saying to 'do us,'" Dorsett said. "Calm down on offense, do our thing on 'D' and do whatever it takes."

South Putnam kept the pressure on up until the last moment as six Eagles got on the board for 21 fourth-quarter points. Bieghler ended the game with 16, Lillie Stein scored 10 and had seven steals. Maddie McHugh led the Eagles with seven boards and Katie Hewitt had six rebounds.

But Cloverdale scored 20 to hold the big lead and earn the higher spot in the conference.

Walker led the Clovers with 18 points, Hamm scored 14 and Cobs led CHS with 11 rebounds.

South Putnam (9-10) will face Monrovia (11-8) on Saturday and then Cascade (10-8) on Tuesday.

Cloverdale's (7-14) next game will be a rematch with the Eagles on Wednesday.
