Cornelia Evelyn Jane Sutherlin, 86, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016 in Marietta, Ga., surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 16, 1929 on a farm north of Greencastle, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle (Masten) McBride.

She graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1947 where she was a cheerleader for three years and played the french horn in the high school band.

On March 11, 1947 she married Richard Sutherlin. They were married 68 years at the time of her passing.

She loved gardening, flowers and crocheting where she won many ribbons at the county and state fairs on her crocheting. She taught crocheting at Purdue Extension services in Greencastle.

She is survived by husband, Richard Sutherlin; daughters Sharon Ellis of Acworth, Ga., and Beth Woodard of Indianapolis, and son Richard (Mercy) Sutherlin of Three Rivers, Mich.; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Medford and Rexford and sister Lyndal Beth McBride, half-sisters Thelma Hess, Gayle Robinson and Jean Bachert, and half-brother Orman O'Hair.

Evelyn was a member of Brick Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was president of the Woman's Group.

She was a charter member of Groveland Homemakers Club, president of Better Homes Home Economics Club of Brick Chapel, and a member of the Mother's Study Club.

A Friend of Purdue, she sang for 29 years in Purdue Choral Club in Parke County, Fulton County and Putnam County where she was president.

She was an officer for 20 years for the Bainbridge Alumni High School Association. She was a member of an Eastern Star. She worked as a salesclerk for Jacobson in Battle Creek, Mich., and worked 10 years at the BMV of Putnam County.

For 20 years she owned the Country Loft, selling handmade craft items and her crocheted items. She sold her crocheted afghans in 10 states and England, Germany and Australia. She also was a co-owner of Western Indiana Cattle Feed Co.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle. Interment will follow at Brick Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31 at the funeral home

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bainbridge Alumni Scholarship program.
