In a practice run Friday afternoon at Area 30 Career Center, judge David Woolums (top right) inspects the culinary work of Bailey Stierwalt of Eminence as Hannah Ashcraft of Cloverdale works on another dish (top left) and Area 30 Culinary Arts instructor Mary Anne Birt observes the progress of her class in advance of its Feb. 26 state competition at the Marriott East, Indianapolis. As the final moments tick down (bottom left) Stierwalt and Bryana Calvert of North Putnam frantically finish their presentation of the Maple Leaf duck dish entree, later sampled by Woolums, a pastry chef at Sullivan University in Louisville, as he critiques the performance of the class. A 1986 South Putnam High School graduate who once worked with Chef Matt O'Neill at the Walden Inn, Woolums said he was impressed by the award-winning Area 30 culinary arts program which did not even exist when he was in school.
