For the first time in school history, the South Putnam High School Future Farmers of America parliamentary procedure team placed first in the event at the Chapter Meeting Contest on Jan. 30.

The team -- seniors Megan Arnold and Megan Rogers; sophomores Ryan Cole, Reagan Ladd, Savanah McIntosh and Ryan Neumann; and freshmen Austin Arnold, Andrew Carr, Garrett Heavin and Eric Hinkle -- competed against six local schools to take first place.

The students thanked Tiffany Douglass, a South Putnam teacher, and Ernie Sheldon, a South Putnam alumnus and Indiana State University professor, for helping the team succeed.

"The kids have worked really hard on this since September," Advisor Amanda King said, "and were given a difficult contest. They proved that hard work really does pay off in the end. I am so proud of these kids."

Winning the contest meant learning more than 25 different parliamentary procedure motions along with their proper execution and improvising discussion. The students also answered questions from the judges and took a written exam.

After being recognized for their accomplishment at the Indiana State FFA Convention at Purdue University this June, the team will compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this October.

To prepare for nationals, the team will organize fundraising and continue to practice their skills. As many as 51 other teams could be at nationals, including teams from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
